1 Peter 5:5
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
"… and be clothed with humility…" Humility should permeate our being. It’s more than an absence of pride. It’s something that manifests itself in our lives and should be part of our inner man. Without humility, you can’t say, "The Lord is my helper." When we have humility, God is our helper and gives us grace. Humility is depending on God. It’s knowing that in ourselves we can’t accomplish anything and we need God’s help.
Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
Humility is about our spirit. What are we? Can you associate with the person on the bottom of the social ladder? Can people come around you and it not be all about you?
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind. And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
Don’t let someone rob you of your reward by a temporary/convenient humility. Be who you are. Don’t try to make yourself more than you are. Real humility won’t elevate itself in its humility. Real humility acknowledges that we owe all we are to Christ. It makes Jesus the great one.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
This yoke is bearable and fits. His commandments aren’t grievous. Learn what Jesus is like and be like him. Humility is a meek and lowly heart. Jesus can put that within us. Everyone is worth our interest, care and concern.
Philippians 2:1-8, 19-21
If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.
Paul pointed them to Christ. We need to be like Christ was. "…but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." This is a picture of a humble person. "Look not every man on his own things, but every man on the things of others." When you’re humble, you can be interested in the welfare of others. Don’t just think about yourself; consider others. Be able to care about others.
Paul wanted to send Timothy because he cared about them and knew Timothy did also. Be willing to give of yourself for others. We want things to turn out good for others. Have a genuine care and interest in others.
Jesus took the humble route all his life. His focus was on other people. He limited himself so that he went to the cross and died for us. As humans, we’re limited. Jesus took on all those limitations to help us. We should have that same lowliness of heart. In humility we have power with God. Humility makes for effective prayer. Humility will plead God’s grace. It will help us in prayer and in life. Come into the lowly place and let God be your helper. Can you just be a servant and bear what God chooses? Be willing to do whatever God requires.
Humility is a quality people should see and experience in us. It should reach out to, befriend and care for, anyone. Jesus gave us an example; learn to be like him. Be humble in heart so that you can be full of his grace.
