Godliness

1 Timothy 3:14-16

These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Paul wanted to see Timothy, but he’d written so that Timothy would have guidance if it took a while. "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness…" Some would make this controversial. The "mystery" is shown in the following: "God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

Godliness is a result of the gospel. When we’re forgiven, we set out to walk with God. We live to show forth the nature and presence of God to a sinful world.

Godliness is bending our will to God’s. Jesus is the example we look to.

Romans 8:28-30

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called; and whom he called, them he also justified; and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

"For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren." God’s plan is for you to be like Christ. "Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called; and whom he called, them he also justified; and whom he justified, them he also glorified." We have the glory of his grace on our lives that causes us to live as Christ did. The world should see Jesus working in you. He wants to show the world Jesus through us. His image needs to be seen in us.

1 Corinthians 15:45-49

And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

He’s mostly speaking of how things will be in heaven. Our bodies will be different. We’ll have a body like Christ’s.

Spiritually speaking, we needed the life Christ brought. We’ve been made alive by Christ’s Spirit. God, by the life he puts within us, can help us to live this life here. Jesus should be the ideal we look up to of all that’s good and great.

2 Corinthians 3:17-18

Now the Lord is that Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

We can be made like Jesus as we focus on him. Take time to get to know him. We know what the Spirit can do in us when we see what he did in Jesus. We want to behold him so that we can be changed to be like him. As we see things in ourselves, we need to be changed to be more like him.

Colossians 3:8-11

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds: And have put on the new man which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

"But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another…" Christ was none of these things. All of these things need to go. They’re not like Christ.

All men are like God in that we’re living souls, but the soul of man fell into sin and became corrupted and wicked. When he saves us, he restores us to what God intended. He’s all that really matters. He becomes the center of our lives and is our very life. We live to follow him. We want him to dwell in us.

2 Peter 1:2-7

Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord. According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

"According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue." Everything we need is given to us by God. God gives us what we need to live holy. As you find needs, go to God for what you need. As God provides, put it to work. Expect to have it work.
