John 13:33-38; 14:1-6

Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Where God is, there is a place prepared (reserved) for you. Jesus gives this preparation his personal attention. It is as intimate a preparation as before a marriage. Jesus put time and care into the selection and preparation of the place.

1 Peter 1:3-4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

God raised Christ and set him by him in heavenly places. That place is incorruptible. Nothing will spoil, wither or decay it, from within or without. It can’t be used up. This is reserved for you by Christ.

John 14:5-6

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Everybody ought to want to come to the Father. He’s the only source of life, light, strength, courage, love, joy, peace and hope. He is the only source of everything good. Everybody must come to the Father. Without him, we’re in bondage to sin. Without him, we’re condemned. We must be freed from the destruction of sin now and flee from the wrath to come. Jesus is the only way to the Father. "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

Three Things:

1 – Jesus is God’s only ambassador.

2 – Jesus is God’s only mediator.

3 – Jesus is the only gift God will accept from man.

1 – The Only Ambassador

Ambassador – one who speaks to man about God

Hebrews 1:1-3

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

"… when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;" God used to speak through prophets, who were people just like us. People didn’t listen to them; they rejected those ambassadors. God has chosen one last ambassador – Jesus. "… whom he hath appointed heir of all things by whom also he made the worlds; who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power…" God had a message to us through Christ: "Be reconciled to God." He has no other ambassador. He won’t send anyone else. If you won’t listen to him, you won’t listen to anyone else. God has chosen to speak through Jesus.

Matthew 21:33-37

Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.

"Last of all…" There was no one else to send. This is your last chance. If you won’t reverence the Son, you won’t reverence anyone else. Jesus is God’s only ambassador.

So, what is our role?

2 Corinthians 5:18-21

And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them: and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

We stand in Christ’s stead. We are Christ’s ambassadors. How do you recognize an ambassador for Christ?

Characteristics:

- Work in his stead (or name)

- Come in his name and seek the honor that comes from God only – "I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?" (John 5:43-44)

- Filled with the Spirit of Christ and bear the fruits of that Spirit

- Speak not of themselves or any other man, but God – "He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you." (John 16:14)

- Reveal Christ to men – "He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you." (John 16:14)

Matthew 17:1-5

And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here; if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

Have you heard the voice of the Son of God? Your hope of eternity has to be built on more than the voice of men. You have to hear Jesus’ voice. God points us to his spokesman – Jesus. He’s the only way to God.

2 – The Only Mediator

Mediator – speaks to God about man

1 Timothy 2:5-6

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. Who gave himself a ransom for all to be testified in due time.

There is one mediator between God and man. Sinful man can’t approach God without this intercessor and advocate. Without Jesus, we can’t receive help from God. Sin alienates man from God. It makes us his enemies. We can’t approach God without the mediator.

"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death; that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For verily, he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted." (Hebrews 2:14-18)

"But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:" (Philippians 2:7)

"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." (Hebrews 4:15)

Jesus became flesh and blood and was like us. He was tempted and didn’t sin. He did all this so that he could be merciful and faithful and make reconciliation for our sins.

Hebrews 7:24-26

But this man because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens:

Because he was tempted like we were, but didn’t sin, he is the perfect mediator. He understands the problem from both sides. He can approach God, but he also understands people. He is the only mediator. God won’t allow any other mediator in his presence. Is Christ your mediator? Have you come to God by him? Jesus is the door. If you try to come any other way, you are a thief and robber. There’s no other way to come to God.

3 – The Only Gift

Christ is the only gift God will accept from us.

Colossians 1:19-22

For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were sometimes alienated, and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

"And you, that were sometimes alienated, and enemies in your mind by wicked works…" "… present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight." How is man transformed from one to the other? It’s a wonderful thing. "And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself…" It happens through the blood of his cross. This is the only way out. We have to be changed to be presented to God and the only way to change is by the blood of Christ’s cross. It’s the only gift God accepts and you can’t appear before God without it. You have to bring something to atone for your sin, and there’s no way we can redeem our own souls. "They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:) That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption." (Psalm 49:6-9) That redemption is precious.

1 Peter 1:18-19

Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

Jesus offered himself as the redeeming gift. He did it by himself. There is no other offering. You can’t do anything to redeem your soul. God won’t accept anything from you, but Jesus’ blood. Nothing else will be acceptable to him. Has Jesus’ blood washed away your sins?

Hebrews 12:24-25

And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven;

Do you know Jesus? Without him, you won’t make heaven. Don’t refuse him that speaks to you.
