Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
The strait (narrow) gate leads to life. He compares the narrow to the broad. It will cost you something to go this way. You’ll have to go through some things to get in. Pressures will come against you to keep you from getting in. There are things you’ll have to overcome to be able to serve God. Most of humanity is looking for the easy way to God. (Luke 13:24 - Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.) They look at the obstacles and turn back. We can’t afford to turn back.
The strait gate is Jesus. The other ways won’t bring eternal life. One way is to go the way of submitting to the church. Or, you could join a church. Neither of those ways bring eternal life. The world balks when you tell them there’s only one way to heaven. If you take the position that Jesus is the only way, expect some opposition.
I am the door; by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
Jesus is the door and people trying to go any other way won’t get in. He died for our sins and we must die to sin to enter in. It’s not something you can just stumble into. The only way in is through salvation. You have to decide to live for him and to draw close to him. It’s been made available to everyone, but some choose to go their own way.
2 Timothy 2:19
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
When you go through Christ, he knows all about you. You can’t sneak past him. He knows who belongs to him, and who doesn’t. The blood has to wash away what would keep you out. You have to belong to Christ to have life.
Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Sometimes we just don’t know how to ask, and we need God’s Spirit to help us. God’s Spirit can help us know how to pray.
You don’t join God’s church; you’re added. You aren’t in until God adds you. Decide you’re going to follow Jesus and know you’re going to have to go over some things to get it. Jesus is who makes you one of his. People can have an opinion about you, but what matters is whether or not Jesus has added you to his own. The only way in is by him adding you. If you would be saved, make that your goal. Be ready to press over any obstacles that would get in your way. Make it your objective to enter in through Christ. Be determined to stay with Christ whatever it takes. You can’t earn your salvation, but be determined that nothing will keep you from the one who can save you.
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
It’s not our accomplishments alone. Many claims are made in the name of religion. We need God’s approval. We won’t make it based on religious accomplishments are nothing. Has Jesus added you to his own? Each of us has to be accepted individually. It’s personal between you and God. Humility is necessary to be added. You have to acknowledge your need of God’s forgiveness. Get it settled with God. The evil would oppose you and try to keep you from getting it. Press past those things. You can have life.
