Kiss the Son

Psalm 2:1-12

Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king up on my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

"I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine." (2 Timothy 4:1-2) The charge to aspiring teachers/preachers is to teach the word, because the people being taught will one day stand before God and they need to be prepared.

This psalm is about Jesus. Three names – 1) "The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed…" – The Lord’s Anointed (Messiah/Christ) – he was anointed and sent with a special mission. Jesus Christ means "the anointed one." 2) "Yes have I set my king up on my holy hill of Zion." – God’s King 3) "I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee." – God’s Son – he is the Son of the living God.

This tells us 3 things about the Son of God: 1) What was, 2) What is, and 3) What is to come. Summary – Jesus was rejected by men, but now he is highly exalted by God, and every knee will bow before him and every tongue will confess that he is Lord.

"The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us." God sent Jesus to be our Savior and King but the world despised and rejected him.

Acts 4:25-28

Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together. For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

Peter was preaching from Psalm 2 about Christ and told how they rose up against him and rejected him. There are people who are standing up against God today. They don’t want the restriction of Christ’s law. They want to do what they want to do. Don’t reject Christ the way these did. That’s what was.

Psalm 2:6-7

Yet have I set my king up on my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

This is what is. God is striving with those that rejected his anointed. God set him on the throne anyway. There are still people who will reject Jesus and won’t declare the decree, but God will declare him anyway.

Acts 5:26-31

Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned. And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, Saying, Did we not straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

They told them not to teach in Jesus’ name, but God, by these ones, declared it anyway. No man can come to God except by Jesus. Jesus was made Savior and Prince over this world.

What Was                               vs.         What Is

Break free of God (rejecting him)              God has set Jesus as King

Psalm 2:8-9

Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

God is speaking to Jesus here. This should bring fear and reverence for this king. The heathen would be given, but not for their good. This is at the day of judgment and it will be a fearful thing for the heathen in that day.

Romans 14:9-12

For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

"For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God." "As I live…" This is an oath or promise of God. This is an awesome twist of the tables. People today are still rejecting Jesus, but a day is coming when it will be clear that God exalted him.

Psalm 2:10-12

Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

The Psalmist speaks to the listener. Since God has made Jesus his Messiah, Son and King, don’t reject him; serve him. Don’t reject Christ as others have. Be wise and serve the Lord. Serve him now.

"Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him." "Kiss the Son…" embrace Jesus now, bow before him and confess him now, accept him now. If you trust him, you’ll be blessed.
