Proverbs 22:1-16

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. The rich and poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all. A prudent man forseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished. By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life. Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail. He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor. Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease. He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend. The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor. The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets. The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the Lord shall fall therein. Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." This isn’t just talking about knowledge. Training can be good or bad. Children are getting training of some kind from their parents. It’s not just taught; it’s caught. The grace of God overcomes bad training, but it can be hard. Teach good things. It will help them in their course of life. "By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life." The fear of the Lord is the path to success. "He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want." Cutting corners and playing politics won’t lead to success. The right way is the best way. "The rich and poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all." Be respectful to everyone. God made all of us… rich or poor. These are the things we ought to be. The little ones are watching us and learning. "A prudent man forseeth evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished." The prudent one sees trouble ahead and works to avoid it. "Thorns and snares are in the way of the forward: he that doth keep his souls hall be far from them." We should be able to see trouble ahead and take heed. Learn from other people’s troubles. It’s easier than having to go through it. Listen to those who have been there and learn from them. If you don’t, you’ll get to learn it for yourself. "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold." If you bypass some troubles, it’s easier to have a good name. There are benefits that go with a good name. A good name is something parents give their children. People can treat you with favor because of a good name. If you have been given a good name, don’t destroy it. "He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor." Teach them that there’s a blessing in giving. The life of a generous person is well-blessed. "Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease. He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend." Graceful lips bring honor; scornful lips bring contention. Graceful lips come from grace in a pure heart. What you say shows what kind of house you’ll have. We don’t want bad attitudes. "Foolishenss is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him." It isn’t just spanking; it’s correcting some conditions. Model the attitude you want your children to have. Show them about the Bible with your life. "The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets." The lazy make excuses. Step up and deal with life. Don’t pass your fears on to your children. The grace of God will keep us through what comes against us. You don’t have to let life destroy you.

Deuteronomy 6:3-9

Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it: that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey. Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

When it comes to training a child, your whole life is a classroom. Children see how you live at home and hear how you talk in public. It should match. It takes time to form the habits of life. Make sure what you’re teaching is good and not bad. Our lives need to be an example to the younger ones. Habits aren’t habits done only once. Teach your children every day of life.

Genesis 18:16-19

And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way. And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

"For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him." Abraham hadn’t had his son yet. Some have thought of America as a nation on a hill, a way for other nations to be blessed. If the children aren’t trained right, we can’t be a blessing to others. Abraham was one that God could use to bless others because he trained his children to be good people. Children still have to choose which way to go, but parents can give them what they need to help them be what they will become. It pays to invest in your children; someday you may be relying on them.
